GARRETT — A dozen Career Development Program students at Garrett High School participated in a signing ceremony on May 20 during a block party in Brennan Estates in Garrett.

During the event, these students signed letters of intent to work for employers or agreements to enter into paid apprenticeships.

The event is part of Career and Technical Education (CTE) Awareness Month, during which educational entities throughout Northeast Indiana conduct student-signing ceremonies.

Edmond O’Neal, president and CEO of Northeast Indiana Works, the region’s nonprofit workforce development organization, was guest speaker for the ceremony.

The event offered an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of the student and the value of certification-based training to both students and employers, according to Corey Schoon, director of the program at Garrett High School.

Among signees were students Corbin Klenke, Clayton Noel, Lane Balzer, Chloe Trausch and Lauren Tinkler, all with Vestil Manufacturing in Angola. Spencer Silk and Kyler Helmkamp signed on with Brooks Construction Inc. of Auburn; Cameron Veldman and Preston Newman both signed with UW Local 166 Plumbers and Steamfitters. Ray Scott signed on with Metal Technologies. Joel Barkey has joined the Garrett Electric Utility and Tim DePew signed on with TFC Canopy.

Schoon recognized the CDP instructors, including Joe Walker, welding; Tyler Emrick, building trades; Ellyn Johnson, math; Nolan Sharlock, heavy highway; and Jonelle Furnish, English.

More than 30 graduating students have now signed on with employers, School said.

An open house was also held for this year’s building trades project home, the second in the school-district owned Brennan Estates development, along with live music and food trucks.
