DeKalb County Leading Population Growth

DeKalb County ranks as the region’s fastest-growing county from 2017 to 2018, but LaGrange

County claims that status for the eight years from 2010-2018.

The U.S. Census Bureau released its population estimates for 2018 Thursday.

They show DeKalb County grew by 0.94% over the preceding year, topping 10 other counties in the

northeast region of the state. DeKalb added 404 residents for a total of 43,226.

Over the eight-year period since the 2010 Census, LaGrange County led the region with 5.93%

growth. It added 2,200 residents in that span to reach 39,330.

Noble County still ranks as the most populous of four counties in the northeast corner, with 47,532

residents in 2018. Noble gained 148 residents in the most recent year for 0.31% growth. However,

Noble County has lost 8 residents since 2010.

Steuben County gained 165 residents, or 0.48% percent, in the most recent year, and 413 residents,

or 1.21% over eight years for a total of 34,586.

DeKalb County’s eight-year growth rate measured 2.36% or 997 residents.

LaGrange County’s one-year increase of 108 residents represented 0.28% growth.

Whitley County added 297 residents in the most recent year (0.88%) and 784 over eight years

(2.36%) to reach 34,074 in population.

The 11-county region grew by 0.62% from 2017-2018 and 3.39% over eight years for a total of

784,805 residents.

Rated annually, the pace of growth in the region and most area counties was faster from 2017-2018

than for the eight-year span.

Allen County ranked second to DeKalb for eight-year growth at 5.63% percent, adding 20,016

residents to reach its total of 375,351.

Wabash and Huntington counties lost population over the eight years from 2010-2018 — with

Huntington down by 2.38% and Wabash declining 4.89%.
