SPENCERVILLE — U.S. Rep. Jim Banks, R-3rd, spent time visiting DeKalb County industries Thursday.

He toured Rhinehart Finishing and Rhinehart Development in Spencerville, in addition to a visit at Metal Technologies Inc. in Auburn.

Established in 1945, the Rhinehart facilities sit on 98 acres and serve customers in the automotive, military defense, manufacturing, construction equipment, aerospace, heavy truck, medical and agriculture fields.

“I’m very familiar with Rhinehart, mostly because of our close work with AM General (a South Bendbased defense and automotive company) and supporting the Humvee,” Banks said. “This is one of the many companies we’ve toured around the district the last couple of years.

“This is a regular part of my job when I’m home on a recess week to visit businesses and better understand the unique businesses I represent in Washington so I can do a better job for them.”

During his visit, Banks learned about the various products made and services offered at Rhinehart.

“I didn’t know Rhinehart was as diversified as they are,” Banks reacted. “They’re involved in a lot of different industries, and that’s a sign of a healthy company. I imagine Rhinehart has many healthy years ahead of them, and hopefully the Humvee will be around for many years and they’ll continue to have that business with AM General.

“It’s great to see a family-owned company in northeast Indiana doing great things, especially related to defense.”

“It’s great to see the economic progress,” he added. “This unprecedented economy that we’re living in right now, the opportunities are there. Businesses like this that are growing, that have goodpaying jobs and are trying to find the workforce to fill those jobs, that’s the story I hear everywhere.

“We are very thankful that Congressman Banks took the time from his busy schedule to visit our small family owned business,” said Mike Gamble, vice president of Rhinehart Development.

“It’s very gratifying to see a United States Congressman genuinely concerned for the well-being and success of a small business, added Tom Diehl, sales manager at Rhinehart. “It really lets you know that we are being represented in Washington by someone who cares.”
