GARRETT — Saint Joseph Catholic School of Garrett has earned recognition as a Four Star School by the Indiana Department of Education.
“Receiving designation as a Four Star School reflects academic excellence among students, educators, and the administration,” said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana superintendent of public instruction. “I am honored to recognize these Four Star Schools for their hard work and dedication in preparing their students for a bright and prosperous future.”
“We are blessed to be recognized by the State of Indiana for our achievements. It’s a reflection of the students, teachers and staff, and the support from the entire Saint Joseph Community, which includes families from Immaculate Conception in Auburn, Saint Michael’s in Waterloo, and Saint Anthony’s in Angola. We are children following God in faith, respect, knowledge and service,” said a statement from Jenny Enrietto, principal of Saint Joseph Catholic School.
The Four Star School Award has been in existence for more than 30 years. To receive Four Star designation, a school must receive an “A” on the state’s A-F accountability system and have excellent ISTEP pass rates. A total of 234 schools received the award based on performance in the 2017-18 school year.
In the area, East Noble High School, as well as Westview’s Meadowview Elementary and Westview Junior-Senior High received the designation.
A Four-star designation is a testament to the work administrators, teachers and students put in every day, East Noble Superintendent Ann Linson said.
“This is not an application process, but instead earned through dedicated teachers and staff members who work hard every day to academically support students and provide opportunities that match their interests and talents to a path of college and/or career and life success,” Linson said.
Westview traditionally has been one of the top school districts in the region for school grades and testing scores, but Superintendent Randy Miller said the district is focused on the present and not resting on its laurels.
“We’re really excited about this. Honestly, I just want to thank the community for their continual support of their commitment to Westview, their continual support for us passing that referendum a few years back. Those things matter. And we’re going to continue to do the very best that we can and try and help as many kids as possible. We’re going to find those kids who are falling through the cracks and helping them,” Miller said. “We cannot rest on what’s happened in the past, we have to
continue to work hard for the future.”
